News Story ~ Update on Government guidance for religious services - Ireland

December 6, 2020

Like many church musicians, we are extremely disappointed with the recently updated government guidance for religious services, during which choral singing, congregational singing and the playing of wind instruments is not permitted at public worship. We are aware that some studies may dispute the need for such restrictions, but we are where we are.

Over the last 10 months, we have adapted, we have embraced technology, we have learnt new ways of doing what we do as church musicians. We know the impact of this pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives and our fervent hope is that we ALL play our part in helping stop the spread of this virus. The lifting of Level 3 restrictions in Ireland does give more freedom for many, but not for all. We hope that people will play their part in allowing us all to return to some semblance of normality in 2021, with continued social distancing, hand hygiene, following the rules and the promise of a vaccine. One day soon, we will return to singing, playing and continuing to lead worship - together!

For many, Advent and Christmas is a particularly special time of year and this year will be very different. For many it will be a lonely, upsetting, disappointing and anxious time. However, the theme of this season is Darkness to Light and the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. There will be many opportunities to take part in online worship and we encourage you to do this and to celebrate this wonderful season together.

Keep us, good Lord,
under the shadow of your mercy
in this time of uncertainty and distress.
Sustain and support the anxious and fearful,
and lift up all who are brought low;
that we may rejoice in your comfort
knowing that nothing can separate us from your love
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
